Many people who purchasing the leather furniture are not really familiar about it. Actually, if you know the difference between the leathers, you can choose the most suitable for your life style. If you want to buy something, you need to know every detail about it and see if you can get the best your money can buy. There are four grades of leather furniture, the top of the line is full grain, and then comes top grain, followed by split grain and bonded leather.

As you can imagine, the best type of leather furniture have a higher price than the other kind of leather. But if you compare the price with the quality, you will find that it is reasonable. These full grains are considered very eloquent and also delicate. You can use this type of leather if you know you wouldn’t be getting it dirty or damaged at all. Top grain leather is also another amazing type of leather. This type is better if you will be using your furniture everyday. You still should avoid having food or drinks on this type of leather.

But if you have many little kids who prefer playing in your living room than the house yard, it’s better if you buy the split grain leather than both types above. Split grain is much cheaper than the higher grade but ironically will wear better especially if you are feasting on them. If you happen to run into furniture that says it is made from bonded leather you should turn away because it is the poorest quality. If you want to get what the average family has then you can simply get the most affordable one which is the split grain.

It is relatively easy to make your garden more beautiful by building a retaining wall, which has a lawn or area of flowers behind it. A retaining wall needs to be strong enough to withstand the pressure of soil weight behind it. It must also be porous enough to allow adequate drainage. Walls made of either dressed stone or rubble are the most popular. When using stone for your retaining wall, you can choose from between two kinds of construction. Dry-wall construction uses earth as filler between the stones. Mortar construction uses cement as the bonding agent.

It is important for the base of a retaining wall to be below the front line, or about six inches down in the northern parts of the United States. For a wall without buttresses or projections, the width of the base should be one-quarter the height of the wall. Walls can taper to a width of about one-quarter of the base width. Walls with buttresses should have bases that are one-quarter as wide as the wall is high. This measurement refers to the widest points of the wall where the buttress will be used. In narrower places the base can be of a thinner proportion.

Every 24 inches and approximately six inches from the lower ground level of the wall, you should embed drainage pipes. If the wall material itself is sufficiently porous, it may be possible to eliminate the need for the drains. In any construction that uses mortar, however, drainage pipes are critical. It is possible to begin at ground level with dry-wall construction rather than six inches below the frost line, but this is not generally recommended.

The cheapest way to construct a dry wall is to select local stone. You can pick larger stones for the main construction and smaller stones for the chinks. The largest stones you have should form the base of the retaining wall, with smaller stones rising to the top. The side of the wall that faces out should be as level as possible. Obstructions and edges of exterior stones should face inward. This allows the wall to hold the soil it is to retain and also makes a good appearance. Stones that have rounded surfaces should be eliminated because they do not form good walls.

All the stones should be placed in a good bond, which means that the edges of stones on one rose, or course, should overlap spaces in the lower courses, or rows. If a stone on an upper course does not fit firmly in place, earth and smaller stones can be packed in to improve the bond. There should be no vertical crevices.

The retaining wall itself should slope back, against the soil it is supposed to retain. This provides greater strength to the wall. The width of the base should be one-third of its height. This is a general rule, but in many areas, it is common practice to slope a wall as much as five to six inches for each vertical foot. This degree of slope is not required, however. The soil should be packed firmly in all the walls pockets and continued back in the soil that is being retained.

Because first impressions count making sure that the railings that surround your deck, line your steps or border your property will help a lot. However many times railings are overlooked in favour of other details such as paving or plants. Many people think railings are something purely functional but you can also add a touch of personality by including a few accents.

Styles of Deck Railing

When searching for deck railings you will find that most resemble wooden fences. Although these may be very practical, they can be a tad dull.

One way you can make your railing more inspiring is by mixing different materials together such as wood and iron. Wood is used for the main braces, posts and top while the iron is used in the middle as support.

Iron can take on my different styles and shapes. It can be curved, twisted and wiggly. There aren’t many designs that couldn’t be achieved using iron. Not only that but it’s extremely strong and highly durable. The wood itself will need to be sanded and stained every so often, but the iron will be able to go years with little or no maintenance.

If you are looking for a material that requires little maintenance and is highly durable then have a look at vinyl. It can withstand rain, frost, heat and other damaging weather conditions. The need for sanding or staining has also been eliminated.

In addition to this, vinyl is great if you have children. This is because it doesn’t splinter like wood does. It doesn’t have any nails or rough edges. There are limits to the medium, however. It comes in very few colors; mainly white and brown.

Although wood can be boring there is still the possibility of buying wood railings that come in different patterns. You don’t have to choose the standard look. Like iron, the wood supports can be shaped to add new elements to the deck railing.

Safety

Although wood is very commonly used for railings they do require a lifetime of care. They need to be sanded, stained and then sealed. This process should be done every few years to keep it looking good for many years to come. However, you will still find a board every now and then that needs to be replaced due to rot. Ensure that rotten parts are quickly replaced otherwise you could cause some injury to people who may lean on it.

Another thing to look for with wood railing is nails. Make sure that all the nails or screws are flush with the wood itself. This will avoid any hand injuries.

It is important that railings are sturdy and shouldn’t move even just a little bit. The spaces between the inside supports should be close enough so that a small child’s or pet’s head could not fit between them.

April often writes articles on home and garden site www.finerliving.net which also has articles relating to patio covers and patio design ideas.

Growing bamboo plants is not that difficult even for the worst green thumb in the world and should be a straightforward exercise.

However, there are some delicate stages bamboo will go through during it’s early phase and we’ll present a simple 5 step process to getting your plant into the ground, ready to face the world!

Bamboos are very hardy and will enhance the appearance of any garden. They are great for creating fence lines and for providing privacy, particularly in suburban areas.

The two varieties of bamboo, running and clumping are two different beasts in a sense. The running variety can be great for creating a quick fix to a fence line but it has caused issues in the past because of it’s intrusive nature. There are ways to contain this variety within a designated space but that’s for another article. We are more concerned with getting your plant in the ground and on it’s way to full growth.

5 Step Planting Process

1. Digging your hole requires two very important considerations. Firstly, the hole should be at least the depth of the pot the plant is sitting in and secondly, you want to give it plenty of space. A general guide for width is about twice the width of the pot. Some go even a little wider.

2. Once the hole is dug, add a generous amount of compost mix into the soil. The compost and soil will surround the plant.

3. When the bamboo is positioned in the hole, the clump of soil around the plant when extracted from it’s pot should be level with the soil line.

4. Watering is extremely important during the plant’s early growth. Be careful not to let the soil around the plant dry out. Some experts consider the first 12-18 months as vital and watering consistently during this period is a prime objective.

5. Fertilizing can be tricky. The plant should receive at least three applications during the first 6-12 months. Presuming you are planting in Spring, fertilize then apply follow up applications in summer and the fall. A nitrogen-based fertilizer is highly desirable when growing bamboo plants.

Right Time To Plant

Spring is usually regarded as the best time for growing bamboo. Planting at this time means the plant is heading into the warmer months however, provided areas don’t drop below 40-45 degrees faranheit or 5-7 degrees celcius in temperature then it may not matter when you plant.

The important thing to remember is to get the plant established during the first six months and although it is a hardy plant, it still needs plenty of nurturing during the vital root growth stage.

Growing bamboo plants in sub tropical and tropical areas is very successful but they can struggle in very cold climates. If you live in a cold climate then consider growing them inside.
